How to Apply for Death Registration

Rwandans can apply for death registration through a service provided by the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC). The application will be sent to the Civil Executive Secretary (ES) of the area where the deceased was registered.


 This service is free of charge, and the processing time is 1 working day. 


Prerequisites:

  • Every applicant should have a national ID number.

  • The compulsory attachment is the hospital death certificate. Others are conditional.

  • The attachment should be 1MB

 The deceased should have:

  • national ID number or child application number for minors (Rwandans) 

  • passport number (for foreigners)

  • The deceased person should be registered as DECEASED in the National Identification Agency (NIDA). 

  • Applicants should have a valid phone number, email address, or both. 


NOTE: Using your or other people's phone numbers is not advisable, as the applicant might miss crucial notifications.



Follow these simple steps to apply for a death certificate: 


  1. Visit the Irembo platformwww.irembo.gov.rw  and log in to your agent account.

  2. To start a new application, click the "new application" icon.


  1. Under Family, click on Death Services.





  1. Choose which death service you want, “Death Registration,” and click Apply


  1. Fill in the Applicant and Deceased Details. The details will be retrieved and displayed on the right side of the page.

  1. Fill in the death and witness details. The witness details will be retrieved and displayed on the right side of the page.



  1. Enter the parent's details and processing details. Attach the required documents, and click Next to proceed. 


NOTE: It's advisable to choose the sector where the death occurred as the processing office.




  1. Verify that the information is true, enter a phone number and/or email address, check the verification box, and click Submit

NOTE: Please check in with the applicant to ensure all information provided is true and correct.


  1. An application number will be generated to follow up on the application status.


NOTE: After applying, the applicant should be advised to visit the sector with supporting documents, including the ID of the deceased.
